MIT developing concrete to last 16,000 years

Materials — By Vik Duggal on June 26, 2009 at 9:20 am

I want to be a land developer one day, but not the “WHAM BAM I put up a building for 20 years and now I have to redo it again because I didn’t do it right the first time” kind of developer. I speak of building the pyramids of the future. Those buildings that will last for thousands and thousands of years; those buildings that will require the least amount of technology to operate, that will take advantage of the natural resources we have and in turn help the surrounding environment be better.

I am in no way a materials person, but I do know that concrete is one of the most widely used products in the industry and MIT is helping me realize that my cause is valid and doable! One of the inventors of the new products claims, “More durable concrete means that less building material and less frequent renovations will be required.” I like this already!

What do you think? Should material like concrete be able to last 16,000 years? Is this a green/sustainable solution? Should we even be using concrete?
